Cyclect and COSCO Shipyard entered a joint venture in the mid-1980s to develop electrical engineering capability at COSCO’s facilities in China. The partnership required Cyclect to deploy and train technical personnel, upgrading the shipyard’s electrical systems competence to support COSCO’s modernising fleet.
The COSCO JV was an early demonstration of Cyclect’s ability to transfer technical knowledge across borders in a demanding industrial environment. Managing a joint venture with a major Chinese state enterprise — aligning technical standards, deploying capable personnel and delivering a sustainable capability upgrade — was not a routine assignment for a Singapore engineering company of that era.
The experience contributed to Cyclect’s understanding of how to structure and operate regional technical partnerships, which has informed its approach to subsequent JVs in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and India.
